Col-Wegner-(5x7)-smilingChristopher Wegner was recently promoted to the grade of colonel, United States Air Force, during a ceremony at Los Angeles Air Force Base. A former resident of Pagosa Springs and son of Brenham, Texas residents Raymond and Patsy Wegner, Chris spent the majority of his childhood in Brenham before moving to Pagosa Springs for his last two years of high school. He returned to Texas in 1987 to attend college at UT Austin, earning an aeronautical engineering degree and an officer commission in the Air Force through the ROTC program. He is currently serving as the deputy director of contracting for the Space and Missile Systems Center located at Los Angeles Air Force Base. He has spent 21 years in the Air Force, spanning numerous assignments around the world, including multiple squadron command positions, the Headquarters Air Force staff at the Pentagon and deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His 2009 service in Iraq culminated in receipt of the Bronze Star Medal.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that Nicolas Thatcher, of Pagosa Springs, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Thatcher was initiated at Fort Lewis College.

Thatcher is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society.

Shannon recently received The Dr. Linda Ekman Simmons Award of Excellence for Outstanding Students in the culturally and linguistically diverse education program. She is currently teaching in the Farmington School District.

 

Michael Maestas Memorial Scholarship – Creede Wylie

The Michael Maestas Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Michael Maestas (Mikie), who was a young man with a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and snowboarding, as well as the sport of rodeo. Wrestling was also a very important part of his life, having wrestled from peewee wrestling all the way through his high school varsity years.

This year’s recipient of the $500 scholarship is Creede Wylie. Wylie plans on attending CSU Pueblo and studying kinesiology. He plans on playing football for CSU Pueblo and possibly wrestling, as well. Wylie was the 2014 heavyweight champion wrestler for the state of Colorado, and he has also had a lot of success in track at the varsity level. He has been active in student council throughout his high school years, as well as various community service projects. The scholarship committee would like to wish him good luck in his college years and congratulate him on a job well done.

The wedding will be at Centerpoint Church on June 14 at 11 a.m. The couple will reside in Seymour, Mo. Amario works as a concrete pumper for Brundage Bone.

royston-DSC_4582Cadet Wesley Royston, of Pagosa Springs, graduated from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets on Friday, May 16. Royston is scheduled to complete his degree in engineering science and mechanics and commission as a Naval Nuclear Officer in May of 2015.

 

Wesley’s father and stepmother are Stuart and Bridget Royston, of Pagosa Springs, and Wesley’s mother and stepfather are Jan and George Love, of Pagosa Springs.

Don and Kathy Ruth would like to cordially invite all of their friends and family to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Saturday, June 7, from 2-4 p.m. at the fellowship hall in the Community United Methodist Church located at 434 Lewis St.

Don and Kathy were married on June 7, 1964, at the Assaria Lutheran Church in Assaria, Kan. They farmed in western Kansas until 1977, when they moved to Pagosa Springs along with their two children. Don was a mechanic for the Archuleta County school district for 14 years and then the director of transportation for six years. Kathy worked 20 years in the Archuleta County Building and Planning Department. She was director of planning and senior planner for the county.

They have two children, Deann Ruth and Steven Ruth.

The couple requests no gifts, please.

She received an associates degree, with honors, in applied science, specializing in surgical technology. She has been doing her surgical rotations at the Mayo Clinic and VA hospital in Phoenix.

Stacy graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 2008. Her proud parents are Oscar and Karla Dominguez, of Pagosa Springs.

While a graduate student, Chris received the prestigious Kelly K. Woodard Award for outstanding achievement in scientific scholarship, research and leadership. He also served as president of the Graduate Student Council in 2013. Chris completed his undergraduate studies in chemical and biochemical engineering at Colorado School of Mines. His proud parents are Bill and Cindy Nobles, previously of Pagosa Springs, now living in Pueblo West.

Over 400 students were named to Fort Lewis College’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2014 semester, among them several from Pagosa Springs. These students took at least 15 credit hours and achieved a 3.60 or higher grade point average.

A reception will be held in Lehi, Utah, on June 26 and another on July 5 in Bayfield. Bridal showers were given by Megan Garey, Kelsey Smith and Lenae Mann. Nicole grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School and will be starting the nursing program at San Juan College this fall, hoping to eventually work in the neonatal branch in the hospital. Myron grew up in Pagosa Springs and graduated from Pagosa Springs High School. Myron graduated from San Juan College with a degree in instrumentation and renewable energy. He now works at BP as an automation technician. The happy couple will reside in Aztec, N.M.
