Evangeline Moorehead Catchpole at 100 years young celebrated her birthday Dec. 17 — a remarkable lady who has lived a remarkable life. Born in Ardmore, Okla., she moved to Pagosa Springs at the age of 12 and graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1931.  Studying piano since the age of 5 and after receiving a piano performance degree in 1935 at Oklahoma College for Women, she and her husband, Harvey Sr., performed as a popular local music duo in Pagosa for the next four decades. She still plays the piano almost every day and also doesn’t miss working the crossword puzzle in the newspaper.  When asked what she credits for such a long life, she usually grins and says, “First, you’ve got to get yourself a set of ancestors that have lived a long time.”  She recently had a celebration in the fellowship hall of her church in Bloomfield, N.M., where a small music combo played a variety of music from her generation.  She was delighted and so were friends and family as she got up and, with the aid of her walker, danced the afternoon away.  According to Vange, she has been privileged to live her life in the 20th and 21st centuries and enjoy so many of the great advances discovered that benefit mankind.

This past week, as a way of saying a special “Thank You,” Grace in Pagosa commemorated a 10-year partnership of holding Sunday morning church services at the Ross Aragon Community Center.

Grace in Pagosa pastors Dale Marks and Jason Rose, along with ministry staff Stephanie Graveson and Anne Broyles, presented a commemorative plaque to Pagosa Springs Mayor Ross Aragon, facility director Cheryl Bowdridge, program coordinator Traci Bishop and administrative assistant Laurie Gutierrez in celebration of this 10-year partnership with the community center.

“It’s a great partnership we have with Grace Church,” said Mayor Aragon.

Grace has been leasing space every Sunday morning at the Ross Aragon Community Center, 451 Hot Springs Blvd. in downtown Pagosa, since 2003. Grace in Pagosa first met in several of the smaller group rooms in the center until growth required them to move to the larger multipurpose room the center offers.

“Since becoming senior pastor in 2011, I have been encouraged by the partnership we’ve had with the community center.  The staff are always a joy to work with and the initiative and foresight they’ve taken to install items such as the large scale room curtains that transform the multipurpose room into an elegant banquet hall are simply wonderful.  It creates a warm and inviting format for our Sunday services and other events,” said Marks.

This fall, Grace in Pagosa and the Ross Aragon Community Center partnered together to install two new 5,000 and 7,500 lumen projectors, as well as world-class trussing and stage lighting.  Both the Festival of Trees and the Hazel Miller Concert were able to utilize these upgrades with wonderful results.

“The Community Center is truly an amazing resource for our town,” said Rose.  “I really enjoy working with Cheryl Bowdridge and her staff.  As facility director she and Mayor Aragon really understand everything that the community center is for our town.  I appreciate the relationship we have with them and pray it continues for a long time to come.”

With the newly-installed professional stage lighting, the center can now be transformed with ease into an elegant meeting place for banquets, large parties, concerts and weddings.  With the upgrade of the two new projector systems, the center is now a highly efficient place for conventions and large-scale community meetings.

The staff of the Ross Aragon Community Center and Grace in Pagosa look forward to the continuation of this partnership.

Grace in Pagosa will hold their annual Christmas Eve Celebration Service at 5 p.m. Dec. 24 at the Ross Aragon Community Center.  All are invited to attend this family friendly evening.

The staff at Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Family Birth Center recently welcomed their first baby of 2014. Kenzie Rae Miller, daughter of Candace Etcitty and Josh Miller of Pagosa Springs, was born at the hospital at 6:47 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Etcitty and Miller were in Farmington, N.M. celebrating the holidays with Etcitty’s family when she began to feel like the baby might be on the way, so they headed to Mercy in the early afternoon on Wednesday. Little Kenzie arrived later that evening. She weighed 7 pounds and measured 20.5 inches in length when delivered by Certified Nurse Midwife Amy Ginn of Southwest Midwives and Family Birth Center staff nurses.

“It was shocking to have the first baby of the year,” said Etcitty. “There were other people here before us, so I guess she stole the race,” she joked.

In the Mercy Family Birth Center tradition, staff presented the “first family” of 2014 with a gift basket full of baby items, including a hand knitted “2014” cap.

Reflecting on the birthing experience at Mercy, Miller said, “If everyone was as nice as the people here, it would be a more peaceful world.”

“Everyone has been so good,” added Etcitty.

Etcitty, 25, works at Wolf Creek Gift Shop, and Miller, 27, is a heavy equipment operator.

Kenzie is the couple’s first child.

Navy Seaman Chase Purcell, son of Douglas A. and Cynthia A. Purcell of Pagosa Springs, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., with honors.

During the eight-week program, Purcell completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly “Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
