Lewis Street block party on Saturday
By Chrissy Karas
Special to The SUN
A big thank you goes to all who live and work on Lewis Street, and to those who volunteered and worked on the paving, new sidewalk and beautification projects for the street.
A block party will be held Saturday to thank everyone and to celebrate completion of the projects.
The day will start out at 9 a.m. with yard sales. In celebration of National Historic month, John and Lynnis Steinert have graciously opened the old jail building next to their home at 380 Lewis St. and, in addition to having a yard sale, they will be giving tours of the building. Staff at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will also conduct tours. The tours begin at 10 a.m. and will go until 2 p.m.
Weather permitting, at noon there will be a potluck at the corner of 303 Lewis St. at Becky McCrainie’s property. The Town Historic Preservation Board has donated burgers, veggie burgers and buns. Becky is providing all the condiments, so bring your favorite dish and BYO to share in the fun. Please bring your own plates, forks and spoons, so we can be as green as we can. You’re welcome to bring chairs and tables on Friday. Jess Wilton will be playing music at the potluck. The Bear Creek is offering specials on food and beer. The folks at Church of Christ will be hosting a barbecue in the afternoon for parishioners.
A drive today on Lewis Street is euphoric compared what we experienced in recent years. The giant machines, gravel road and dust are things of the past. Finally, we have a beautiful street on which to drive and to take a walk. So, let’s party!

Gabrielle Pajak awarded CSOC scholarship

Gabby Pajak, seen here with Archuleta County Sheriff Pete Gonzalez and Undersheriff Rich Valdez, is the Archuleta County recipient of a $500 scholarship from the County Sheriff’s of Colorado.
Peter L. Gonzalez, Archuleta County sheriff, is pleased to announce that Gabrielle Pajak is this year’s recipient of the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC) scholarship award for Archuleta County.
CSOC, Colorado’s state sheriff’s association, offered a total of 32 awards of $500 each this year to deserving high school and college students in Colorado to fund higher-level education expenses for the 2013-2024 academic year.
A citizens committee selected the winner for each county. Committees made their selections based upon criteria established by CSOC, including leadership, merit, character, involvement, purpose and need. Applicants were required to be full-time, legal Colorado residents who planned to attend a Colorado university, college or trade school.
This is the 34th year for the CSOC scholarship program. Monies for the program are derived, in part, from the CSOC honorary membership fund, which consists of contributions from the individual citizens and businesses each year.
If you are interested in providing continued support for this program, contact the County Sheriffs of Colorado at (720) 344-2763 or visit the website at www.CSOC.org.
Celebrate Fred Harman’s birthday at museum and Gomez Store
By Norma Harman
Special to The PREVIEW
The Fred Harman Art Museum will celebrate Fred’s 86th birthday on Saturday, May 25.
All residents of Archuleta County will be admitted free of charge that day and will also receive a gift of four Harman cards with envelopes. Lemonade and cookies will be served.
The Gomez Store will be open to the public that day, as well. This is a rare treat for all of us and we thank Lily Padilla and Ray for opening the store that day.
The San Juan Shootists will put on a display of fast draw shooting around noon and Doug Chapin, a Red Ryder impersonator, will also be at the site. So, if any bandits should try to rob the Gomez Store, you can be sure that Red Ryder will stop the robbery and arrest the bad man.
Please stop by between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and spend some time visiting and sharing your memories of life in the “good old days,” when things were a bit different around here. Fred may even have a few stories of his own to tell. You think?

Birthday wishes come true for future pilots
By Deidra Fortier
Special to The SUN
When asked what they wanted for their birthdays, future pilots Colin Vosika, 7, of Bayfield, and Joe Dalsaso, 7, of Durango, said: “Fly to Pagosa Springs and have donuts with the pilots.”
So, they did.
It was a beautiful morning at Stevens Field last Saturday when Grandpa (Papa) Bob Winski’s plane touched down on Runway 1, inbound from Animas Air Park in Durango. On board were two special young gentlemen decked out in their leather aviator jackets and flight suits. They were Colin Vosika, grandson of pilot Bob Winski, and Joe Dalsaso, son of Mark Dalsaso — all of La Plata County.
Back in 2011, the boys flew with Grandpa and Dad to Stevens Field from Durango and joined the Pagosa Pilots for their weekly Saturday morning coffee and donuts (minus the coffee, of course) at the Stevens Field FBO. They were 5 years old at the time. When the local pilots noticed how serious these two future aviators were about flying, they were treated as just a couple more pilots flying in for donuts and talking about planes.
Colin has been flying with his grandpa since he was 14 months old, so you can say it’s in the blood. The boys were treated to not just donuts, but also their own individual sized birthday cakes. Needless to say, by the time they boarded grandpa’s plane to head home, they could have flown back to Durango without it.
All in all, it was a special day, not just for the birthday boys, but also for our local pilots. Sharing their love of flying with the boys only rekindles their own love of flying and reminds them why … blue skies and tailwinds make them smile.
